Holiday Entitlement - Public holidays over Christmas and New Year
There are four public holidays over Christmas and New Year:
- Christmas Day (25 December)
- Boxing Day (26 December)
- New Year's Day (1 January)
- Day after New Year’s Day (2 January).
It is important, as an employer, that you are meeting your obligations under the Holidays Act 2003. The Holidays Act 2003 sets out the correct methods for calculating pay for annual leave, public holidays, sick leave and bereavement leave.
We recommend doing regular ‘health checks’ of payroll systems and processes to ensure you are managing the entitlements in accordance with the Holidays Act 2003. Especially at this time of year as calculations can be complex and errors can occur resulting in employees being under or overpaid.
Some questions to ask yourself are: Are you maintaining your employees’ holiday entitlements? Are you correctly administrating leave requests? or Do you have staff who have accrued more than 20 days of holiday pay during the year?
Mismanagement of Holiday Entitlements can be a big cost to a business, which is why we recommend developing a process to check you are doing it correctly.
