Nexia Hawke’s Bay achieve Toitū net carbonzero certification

Embracing ESG: A pathway to sustainable business in New Zealand

Nexia Hawke’s Bay has recently achieved Toitū net carbonzero certification – an important step in our broader commitment to sustainability and responsible business practice. This milestone is part of a larger ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) strategy being implemented across the Nexia New Zealand network.

Whether you’re actively engaged in ESG or just starting to explore what it means, the reality is that every business – large or small – has an impact on people and the planet. ESG is about understanding and managing that impact in a structured, transparent way.

In New Zealand, the ESG landscape is evolving quickly. With shifting regulations, new expectations from stakeholders, and a growing need for clarity, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by conflicting advice and technical jargon. So, let’s take a step back and unpack the basics – what ESG really means, why it matters, and how your business can approach it with purpose.

What is ESG?

  • Environmental: Focuses on a business’ impact on the planet, including carbon emissions, waste management, and resource use.
  • Social: Examines how a company manages relationships with employees, suppliers, customers, and communities, emphasising diversity, equity, and community engagement.
  • Governance: Involves the leadership structure, ethical practices, and compliance with laws and regulations, ensuring accountability and transparency.

New Zealand

  • Mandatory Climate-Related Disclosures: As of January 2023, large financial market participants in New Zealand are required to disclose climate-related risks and opportunities. This includes publicly listed companies, banks, and insurers. The legislation mandates around 200 entities to report on their climate impacts, enhancing transparency and accountability in the financial sector.
  • Alignment with Global Standards: New Zealand’s regulations align with international frameworks, supporting the transition to a low-emissions economy and meeting global climate commitments.
  • Chapter Zero: The New Zealand government has legislated a commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Why ESG Matters for New Zealand Businesses

  • Investor Demand: There is a growing expectation globally from investors for businesses to demonstrate sustainable practices and transparency in their operations.
  • Risk Management: Effective ESG strategies help identify and mitigate risks associated with climate change and social issues, enhancing long-term resilience.
  • Reputation and Trust: Companies that prioritize ESG principles can build stronger relationships with stakeholders, fostering trust and loyalty.
