What is a CSV file?

CSV stands for “comma-separated values” and is one of the most common outputs for spreadsheet programs. A CSV file stores numbers and text in plain text, where each line of the file represents one data record.

When setting up Xero or preparing your tax return, we may ask for a CSV file of your bank transactions.

This is because Xero pulls information directly from your bank and sometimes some or all of the information is missing. When this occurs we can add the missing transactions to Xero by importing a CSV file.

A CSV file can be downloaded from your internet banking. Each bank has a slightly different method for doing this.
