Nexia NZ welcomes new audit team members

May 8, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has sent the world into a spin, with many businesses having to quickly adapt how they operate in this new and challenging environment. Cantabrians especially, know what it takes to deal with adversity and find a way to carry on. Nexia NZ are not so much operating as ‘normal’, but more the ‘new normal’, and despite these current challenges, Nexia New Zealand have welcomed four new team members into their audit division recently: Emily Briggs, Stefan Theron, Steve Yang, and Vicky Sun.

We have been investing in our audit practice to ensure we are offering an exemplary service of the highest possible quality to both existing and prospective clients. Our client centric model, and investment in our people, has strengthened our position in the market over recent months, which has led to a significant growth and diversification of our audit client base. It has been exciting to add a number of new staff to our team, each bringing a variety of experience and skills to the firm.

Although our new staff all agree that the Nexia NZ team have been very welcoming, albeit from afar, starting a new position in the middle of an epidemic has undoubtingly brought its challenges. We are thankful that we have the right technology and skills to allow our team to continue to work effectively from home, ensuring our clients still receive the service they expect from Nexia NZ. This has also meant that our new team have still been able to start, or continue their roles, with the right support and coaching, from their bubble.

Emily joined Nexia NZ mid- February, and although was considered a part of our team before the lockdown, she has spent most of her time onsite with our clients. So for Emily, working remotely and seeing her team through virtual means was more normal than for most of us.

Born and raised in the North Island, Emily moved to Christchurch nearly four years ago. Before starting her position at Nexia NZ, Emily worked for a Big 4 firm for two years. Emily has found working from home in her new role to be challenging, especially as she currently lives with six others. “I look forward to getting back to the office and immersing myself in Nexia NZ’s social culture. I’m missing socialising big time”.

Stefan joined Nexia NZ at the beginning of March, and only spent 10 days in the office before Nexia, following Government directives, decided to close the office and work from home.

Stefan grew up in Pretoria, South Africa, and graduated from the University of Pretoria. Stefan began his audit career working for a Big 4 firm in South Africa, where he also qualified as a Chartered Accountant and moved into an IT and external audit hybrid role. Ready for a new and exciting challenge, Stefan and his wife moved to New Zealand at the start of the year. When Stefan is not auditing, he enjoys hiking, travelling and golfing. “I am looking forward to heading out to NZ ski fields this winter”.

Steve had an interesting first day at work. He joined Nexia NZ the day we were preparing the office to start working from home that afternoon. It is fair to say it was a whirlwind induction!

Steve was born and raised in China, before moving to America to complete a master’s degree. When he is not auditing, he spends his spare time with his young family playing tennis and he is looking forward to being able to enjoy skiing on NZ’s slopes post lockdown. “I am really excited to join Nexia and assisting our wide range of clients, who have a variety of needs. I’m also looking forward to meeting everyone when we are back in the office”.

Nexia welcomed our new Audit Manager, Vicky, to the team at the end of April, mid-lockdown.

Vicky was born in Taiwan and moved to NZ with her family at the age of 11. She studied degrees in accounting and Japanese at Canterbury University. Vicky is trilingual, speaking English, Mandarin and Japanese. In her spare time, she enjoys going for a bike ride or walk, and is looking forward to the day where we can enjoy international travel again. “Although technology is great, nothing can replace face to face interaction. I look forward to my first day at the Nexia office and meeting everyone in person”.

“This is exciting times for the Audit team at Nexia NZ as we navigate our new normal. Our investment in our people has and will always remain a priority and this is evident by the amazing talent we continue to attract and develop within the Firm”. - Nathan Breckell, Audit Director at Nexia NZ.

We’ve enjoyed getting to know our new team members as best we can while we keep to our bubbles and look forward to properly welcoming them to the Nexia NZ team when we return to the office at Level 2.

We currently have an Intermediate Auditor role available in our successful Audit team. If you like the sound of working for Nexia New Zealand, head on over to our Vacancies page:
